Have you ever wished you could create an issue of an ASHA journal that is tailored to your particular interests?
Have you been looking for a way to easily group articles by a topic or author and keep them on hand for future reference?
Or perhaps you just want to be able to order a print copy of a particular issue…
Our new Custom Publishing features now make these and many more options available to you. Browse this FAQ for a complete look at the possibilities for making the most of this new resource.
Custom publishing is simply a set of options for:
Does this replace the current issues of the journal?
No—this is just a way to offer added convenience to our readers. We’re still publishing the journals online, and ASHA members still get unlimited online access. See below for examples of how these new custom publishing options can be used to create specialized versions of journals to suit a variety of needs.
How can I use these features to make my life easier?
Create a customized issue that meets your exact needs.
Let’s say you’re working in a school system and specializing in treating children who stutter (CWS). You’re busy and don’t have time to read every single article in an issue just yet, but you know of several recent articles that you need to have on hand for quick reference…
If you’re an ASHA member you’re already getting the tables of contents (or eTOCs) e-mailed to you for each issue of each ASHA journal. Over the course of a few issues, you might, for example, see three articles related to CWS in one journal, two in another, and several in another. Or you might see research from a particular researcher who focuses on the specific subgroup of children you work with.
With custom publishing, you have the option to batch whichever articles meet your exact needs—all in one easily browsed and stored document. You can elect to have all the articles put together into a single “ePrint” that you can print out if you want or share with your colleagues. Or you can choose to have the articles printed, bound, and shipped to you, even with expedited shipping. Just like that, you can create a fully customized issue of a journal that you can, for example, read on the train, keep on the nightstand, or flip through in a comfy chair on one of those rare days off.
Develop coursepacks and training materials that will blow your students away.
Let’s say you’re teaching a course or doing an in-service training and need to develop easy-to-use resources that include articles from ASHA journals plus some of your own materials.
Using eTOCs, browsing the journals’ websites, and running searches on the journals’ websites can all help you find specific articles you need for your course or training session. But rather than sending students or colleagues numerous links and attachments to review in advance of the training or class, you can now easily have all these materials put together into a single compilation. Then you can choose to receive ePrints of these compilations or have printed, bound volumes sent right to you.
Choose the option that best fits your needs for keeping up with the research in your field.
Finally, let’s say you need to have a print version of an entire issue of a journal, such as one featuring an important clinical forum in your field from a few years back, or perhaps you just prefer to read new issues in print. Now you have options.
If you just recently joined ASHA and don’t have print volumes of journals from recent years, you can now obtain print issues going back to 2006 (also available as ePrints). Just look for the “Buy This Issue” link at the top of an issue’s table of contents. In just a few clicks, the issue will be headed for the printer to be sent on its way to you.
In addition, although ASHA no longer sends all members print versions of journals, we realize that online is not the preferred medium for some members. We are committed to providing the resources our members need so that they can keep abreast of the latest research. This new custom publishing service offers a number of possibilities and options, as detailed above, but it can also be used to simply receive a print version of an issue on an as-needed basis.
You won’t be locked into any subscriptions or commitments, and as an ASHA member you of course still have unlimited online access, so you can preview an entire issue before opting to buy a print copy. Please be assured that we offer this service as a convenience and have kept prices to the bare minimum to cover our costs.
How does custom publishing work?
We have worked with Sheridan Press for many years to publish the print journals. We have partnered with them to make these new features available to you. All aspects of the transactions—from taking the order, to printing the materials, to shipping them right to you—are handled through their secure website and production systems.
Single copies of printed articles and publications are available for back issues and publisher collections of any size or for articles and custom publications with page counts of 61 to 324, in black ink only or in full color. If you need more than the maximum number of copies available in the shopping cart, please contact a Customer Service Representative using the "Contact Us" menu tab.
Your articles or publications are printed on excellent quality paper and with superior press reproduction. Single articles are saddle-stitched with self-cover. Custom publications are bound with an attractive cover (printed on heavy cover stock) and a table of contents. Printed products will be shipped in 7 to 10 days. Expedited shipping is available.
You may choose an electronic format (ePrint) for single articles and custom publications when you need 60 pages or less, or for an electronic collection consisting of 12 articles or less. The electronic format includes unlimited viewing, 25 prints, and a feature allowing you to forward the electronic publication to 25 of your colleagues.
Your electronic product will be delivered to you via email in 24–72 hours from purchase. Your electronic publication can be printed from your home or office printer.
To select the articles or issues you want to receive, look for any of the following links next to article titles or at the top of the table of contents of issues. The “Custom Print” link will also appear next to article titles in search results on the journals’ websites and will appear in the “Content Box” that is found with every abstract or full text article.
Custom Print—For every article all the way back to the first issue of the Journal of Speech Disorders in 1936. Here’s an example of where to find these links in any table of contents:

Buy This Issue—Whenever you need to get a print version of an entire issue or get an ePrint (a single PDF), just look for this link at the top of the table of contents.

Buy A Collection—Whenever you need to get a print version of one of our collections, go to the collections page
Search Results—Just like for articles in a table of contents, the link will be easily spotted.

Content Box—The menu box on the right of any abstract page or first page of an article will now contain these links.

Clicking the link will add the article or issue to your shopping cart. You can then check out or continue to add articles or issues to your cart. Costs will be automatically recalculated as you add or remove items; costs are dependent on the total number of pages in your order.
For ASHA members, you do not need an ASHA customer number or login info to complete your transactions on the Sheridan site. You will receive an e-mail confirmation for any transactions. Customer Service contact info is provided at the end of this FAQ and on the Sheridan site.
