Discussions of signal detection theory and psychophysics (acquiring thresholds) appear unanimous in condemning the threshold as an adequate measure of the sensory system of a listener. The viewpoint is here presented that signal detection theory and thresholds need not he antagonistic concepts. Rather, a plea is made for the utilization of signal detection theory information to develop more adequate threshold-obtaining procedures.
