Bekesy audiograms for interrupted and continuous tones of 4000 cps were obtained on a sample of 120 patients whose sensitivity ranged from 0–95 dB HL and whose cochlear function ranged from normal to severely impaired. Statistical analyses of measures made of these audiograms indicate that the width of the Bekesy tracing around the threshold for the continuous tone (Wc) is an adequate definition of a non-normal population and provides the only basis for reliable classification of fixed-frequency Bekesy audiograms into the categories of pathological or normal cochlear function.
