The investigation was concerned with temporal summation for supraliminal electrocutaneous stimuli to the tongue. One experiment (N = 5) dealt with pulse duration and a second experiment (N = 5) was concerned with pulse number or pulse train duration. The results provide evidence of stimulus duration effects indicative of temporal summation for electrocutaneous stimuli to the tongue related to pulse duration and to pulse number or pulse train duration. The differences in the "time constants" for the two summation functions suggest that different neural mechanisms underlie the summation processes.
