Short-term habituation of the averaged electroencephalic response (AER) was studied in 12 14- to 18-week-old infants. No evidence of habituation was observed for either pure-tone or broad-band stimuli. This finding is in sharp contrast with the rapid AER habituation observed in adults. The results suggest that the competence reflected by short-term habituation is not fully established at birth, but rather develops with further experience or neurologic maturation.
