Eight young adult stutterers participated in an adaptation series under neutral and alarm conditions. In the latter condition, fairly intense audiovisual stimulation was interposed between the first and second readings. The typical decrease in stuttering on the second reading of an adaptation series did not occur in the alarm condition. Explanations of the adaptation effect are assessed in light of these findings.
