Monaural spondee thresholds (STs) of 35 adult patients were measured in ascending 5-dB steps. Repeat measurements were performed in all cases. The high positive correlations (0.96 and 0.97) between ascending 5-dB STs and pure-tone averages, and the good test-retest agreement (± 5 dB) are very similar to results reported previously mmfor STs measured in descending 5 dB steps. The primary advantages of the ascending method are that it has simplified sampling beginning and end points, and it may be well-suited to examining for functional hearing loss.
